Before Surgery

The first step is visiting the dentist, where you will set a date for the operation to happen. It is essential to engage the dentist to find out as many things as you can. The questions you should ask are;

  1. What kind of anesthesia will the doctor use?
  2. Is it safe to take prescription drugs before and after the procedure?
  • Ask whether the health problems that you have can affect the procedure.
  1. When do you need to arrive at the office?
  2. How complicated is the surgery?

These are some of the questions you can ask the dentist, and if you have any other personal query, you must ask the dentist, so do not go home with unanswered questions.

During Surgery

During the procedure, the dentist will use anesthesia, and you can expect the doctor to use either of the following types of anesthesia;

  • Local – If the doctor decides to use local anesthesia, you will be awake during the whole procedure. You will get an injection around the tooth extraction section, and you should not feel any pain as the tooth is being removed.
  • Sedation – If you are sedated, you will be unconscious as the procedure is taking place, and is done through an intravenous line in your arm. Sedation is also combined with local anesthesia.
  • General – Drugs are given through a vein, or you breathe in the drug, and if you get this type of anesthesia, you won’t feel any pain, and you will have no memory of the procedure.

The dentist makes an incision on the teeth, removes the tooth, and stitches the wound to promote healing.

After Surgery

After the procedure that takes about 45 minutes, you may recover fast, depending on how you respond to the anesthesia. The dentist will guide you on what to do to, and some of the instructions include;

  1. Placing an ice pack on a swelling.
  2. In the first 24hrs, you should not brush your mouth, but rinse your mouth, and use mouthwash.
  3. Eat soft foods, and drink a lot of fluids.
  4. Do not smoke
  5. Use drugs that are prescribed by the dentist to ease the pain.

You can expect these things when you want to extract a wisdom tooth, and you won’t require a follow-up appointment after the procedure.
